The primary function of an off-grid inverter is to convert the direct current (DC) that is produced by solar panels (or by your hydro or wind power system) to the alternating current (AC) that your house runs on.

Off-grid inverters are available in three waveforms: square wave (the lowest efficiency), modified square wave (or modified sine wave) and pure sinewave. The prices of higher quality inverters are low enough to make square wave inverters unattractive to today's consumers. Modified sinewave inverters are an affordable choice where waveform is not critical for the performance of electronic equipment like washing machines, sewing machines, and stereos.

Their high surge capacity enables them to start motors that draw high loads, and they are energy efficient when running small loads like lights or stereos or small fans.

Unfortunately, modifed sine wave inverters can mess with, even ruin, some low cost rechargeable flashlights and appliances. Their waveform is not compatible with sophisticated appliances, including laser printers, copiers, sewing machines, and washing machines. Modified sinewave may cause an annoying background buzz in some televisions and audio equipment.
