Our battery bank packages include the appropriate number of 12 inch 2/0 gauge interconnect cables or 12 inch 4/0 gauge battery to inverter cables. And, any bank that has multiple strings will include 18 inch 2/0 gauge paralleling interconnect cables. Flooded battery packages will also include a float hydrometer. The battery bank of any off-grid renewable energy power system is one of the most important and costly components in your installation. Regardless of how much power you generate, efficient storage and distribution of electricity will ultimately determine how reliable your system is. Managing your energy harvest efficiently is the ultimate goal for any renewable energy system, and the configuration of your battery bank plays a critical role in the overall system efficiency.
Battery banks can be composed of a single cell, yet they usually consist of multiple batteries interconnected in either series or parallel configuration to achieve the desired voltage or amp-hour capacity. When connecting batteries in series configuration, current or amp-hour capacity will remain the same, while voltage increases in relation to the sum of batteries. In a parallel configuration, voltage remains the same, while the current or amp-hour capacity of the battery bank will increase based of the number of cells used. Using the proper gauge or size of interconnecting cables is important due the small amount of energy loss in wiring resistance. |
Battery bank sizing and configuration can be one of the more complex and important calculations in your system design. As it turns out, this topic has been one of the most debated issues in renewable energy applications. There are many variables involved in sizing your bank including daily electrical usage, days of autonomy, depth of discharge limit, and ambient temperature at the battery bank. Efficient battery bank design also involves selecting the proper type of deep cycle cell to meet the needs of your system.
